Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra

The Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra is a new gathering of young folk musicians and singers (15-30yrs) from across Australia meeting to learn, teach each other and perform traditional and contemporary folk songs and tunes from Australia and beyond.  Through a tapestry of workshops, sessions and performances, Folkaphonic will provide opportunities for young musicians to learn a variety of musical styles in a space dedicated to development, friendship, inspiration and sharing.

In 2020, the Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra will make its sixth appearance at the Illawarra Folk Festival in NSW. The orchestra will perform 19th January 2020, with rehearsals at the Illawarra Folk School on 15 and 16 January 2020 and during the festival.

So, you want to be part of the Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra?  Great!  We want to hear from you!  Even if you can’t make it to the Illawarra Folk Festival for the launch of Folkaphonic (see details below) you can still register your interest to be part of the Folkaphonic community. To apply, you need to be an intermediate to advanced level acoustic musician between the age of 15 and 30 and an Australian resident.

Illawarra Folk Festival Folkaphonic Scholarships

A limited amount of scholarships to be part of the Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra at the Illawarra Folk Festival are available for interstate participants. The scholarship will provide entry to the Festival and the Folk School and for any under 18s, A Festival pass will also be provided to a supporting parent / guardian. So don’t miss out, apply now!

Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra

The Illawarra Folk Club and the Illawarra Folk Festival are excited to support the Folkaphonic Youth Orchestra.

– Play arrangements of traditional style folk tunes from Australia and beyond.
– Play arrangements of traditional and contemporary Australian folk songs featuring youth guest singers

– Australian musicians between 15 and 30 years of age.
– Intermediate to advanced musician level.
– Instruments to be acoustic type – violins, cello, accordions, guitars, mandolin, hand style percussion, double bass, whistles, banjos.

– Music will be available to be downloaded
– Rehearsals at the Illawarra Folk School (Northern Bulli Uniting Church Halls) 15 & 16 January 2020.
– Performance at the 2020 Illawarra Folk Festival (Buli Showground) 19 January 2020.
